Pool Shock Treatment
Keep your pool sanitized and disinfected!
The best way to ensure your pool is sparkling clean and safe for your family is to keep the pool properly shocked. Pool shock treatment contains powdered or granular chlorine that provides a convenient and effective way to make sure your pool water is sanitized and disinfected.
Using pool shock super-chlorinates your water and helps maintain a safe and sanitary swimming environment by oxidizing pollutants. Pollutants make the pool water cloudy. When chlorine in the pool water mixes with nitrogen in sweat, oil and urine—chloramines are formed.
Chloramines often have a strong odor and may irritate eyes and skin and cause respiratory problems. Basically, shocking a pool means adding enough chlorine or other chemicals to eliminate the buildup of chloramines.

How often should I shock my pool?
For an average size family that uses the pool several times a week, we recommend using pool shock once a week. For a larger family or a pool that's used more frequently, twice a week is recommended.
To help prevent algae or other contaminants from growing or spreading, an extra shocking is recommended under certain circumstances, such as
- Heavy pool usage-such as a block party or pool party
- Severe storm, heavy rain, or damaging winds (especially if debris landed in the pool)
- Major water level change for any reason
- A bowel-related pool accident
To be certain the chemicals work properly when shocking your pool, always add chlorine shock after the sun has gone down. If not, the sun will burn off unstabilized chlorine.
Pool Shock Safety
Using pool shock is necessary for good maintenance, but it's important to remember the chemicals used can be extremely dangerous if misused or mishandled. Improperly stored chlorine can explode.
- ALWAYS wear protective gear-such as goggles and gloves when handling and dissolving chlorine.
- ALWAYS avoid directly breathing from the containers.
- NEVER mix pool shocks.
- NEVER add shock directly to your water unless package states to do so.
- ONLY open one container at a time.
