Keeping your pool water pristine and safe requires regular shock treatments to eliminate bacteria, algae, and organic contaminants that everyday chlorine can’t always handle. Whether you have an inground or above ground pool, Doheny’s professional-grade pool shocks deliver powerful cleaning and oxidation to restore clarity and freshness all season long.
Calcium Hypochlorite Shock (Cal-Hypo) is a fast-acting, granular chlorine shock widely used for tackling tough algae blooms and heavily contaminated pools. Also called super shock, it boosts chlorine levels quickly and effectively removes bacteria and algae. Doheny’s Super Shock contains 68% calcium hypochlorite, making it one of the most powerful chlorine shocks available.
Di-Chlor Shock combines chlorine with cyanuric acid in a stabilized granular formula that protects it from sunlight degradation. It’s gentle on vinyl liners and delicate surfaces, making it a great choice for pools with vinyl, fiberglass, or colored plaster finishes. Di-Chlor also lowers pH slightly, so you may need to balance your pool chemistry after use. It works well with saltwater and liquid chlorine pools.
Oxidizing Shock (Non-Chlorine Shock) is a chlorine-free alternative designed to oxidize contaminants without irritating skin or eyes. It allows you to swim just 15 minutes after treatment and is perfect for weekly maintenance alongside traditional chlorine shock to keep your pool sparkling clear and comfortable for swimmers.
For all Doheny’s professional pool shocks, the standard dosage is 1 lb per 10,000 gallons. In cases of algae outbreaks, double the amount to 2 lbs per 10,000 gallons for a deeper clean.
Your choice depends on pool type, surface, and sanitizer system. For more details, check out our detailed guide to different types of pool shock.
Shock your pool weekly or as needed—especially after heavy use, storms, or when algae appears. For best results, apply shock treatments at night to prevent UV sunlight from reducing effectiveness, allowing you to swim safely by morning.
For most chlorine-based shocks, wait 12 to 24 hours until chlorine levels return to normal to avoid irritation. Non-chlorine oxidizing shock lets you swim just 15 minutes after treatment.
Test free chlorine levels to confirm they’ve risen and stabilized. You should also notice reduced chloramine odor and clearer water as contaminants break down.
Your filter may need to run 24-48 hours to clear debris. Vacuuming dead algae and balancing your pool’s chemical levels can also help. Incorrect shock dosages or poor circulation might cause lingering cloudiness.
